Burns Day 1; Tuesday night, January 21, 2020
Carson is coaching Skylar's basketball team and it's the best! His friend Cason is coaching with him and the 2 of them are having fun coaching this cute group of girls.
I was at practice with Carson and Skylar when Mike called to tell me that Dave Nash would be taking him and Jack to the hospital bc they got burned while Jack was trying to fry OREO's on the stove. I honestly thought he was joking. Unfortunately, he wasn't.
I ended up dropping Skylar and Carson off at home and meeting Mike and Jack at Scripp's Encinitas Hospital. They were getting super wrapped up in bandages there but were told that they needed to go to the burn clinic at UCSD Medical Center.
I drove them down there and got the story of how the burns happened. I remember that I kept saying "I don't get it" and asking them a lot of questions. From what I've gathered, and I'm not a reporter, this is what I have learned...
How Mike & Jack got burned:
Jack decided to fry some OREO'S on the stove. He wanted to also try frying butter. He poured some vegetable oil into a small saucepan. When it didn't seem to be getting as hot as he wanted he decided to put the lid on the pan so it would get hotter faster. Mike told him "this is the stupidest thing you've ever done." He also told him to put some shoes on in case the oil starting squirting out onto the floor. When Jack took the lid off of the pan the oil caught fire because it was so hot and it mixed with the air. So Mike started looking for our fire extinguisher. He couldn't find it anywhere so he told Jack to open a door and decided to take the burning pot outside bc the flames were getting bigger. He started heading toward our back door and the hot oil started burning Mike's hand. The oil was spilling onto the carpet and splashing the side of our couch so he started running faster to get it outside when he slipped on the oil drippings. Jack was coming toward Mike with the fire extinguisher at the moment that Mike slipped so the hot oil ended up all over Mike's hand, legs and Jack's legs and one arm.
Mike was worried about the mess he'd just made so he started cleaning up and told Jack to go up to the shower. Then Mike called his friend Rod Nash who is a fire fighter to ask him what to do for burns. Rod was out of town so he called his brother Dave Nash, who drove over to our house and ended up driving Jack and Mike to the hospital.
The doctors treated Mike and Jack right away at the burn center. I dropped them off at the hospital and then went to get some gas in my car. Of course, I had to grab a couple of boxes of OREO;s to bring them back to the hospital. When the doctors were treating Jack & Mike I still didn't realize how serious their burns were. I was talking to Bailey on the phone when Mike started feeling like he was going to faint. HIs blood pressure was dropping quickly and he was looking very white. Two nurses worked together to give Mike oxygen, lower his bed down so his head was lower than the rest of his body and take his vital signs. Meanwhile Jack was being treated in the room next door and the doctor told me that Mike would be free to go home but Jack had to be admitted bc his burns were more severe and bc he's a child. The doctor explained that children are harder to treat for burns because the pain is so severe that they need to keep them in the hospital to have professionals treat their burns and manage their pain.
So, Mike and I got Jack settled in his room in the burn unit and then I drove him home. We got home around 2:00am. At this time I mopped the floor a couple of times bc it was so slippery with oil everywhere and I packed up a bag for the hospital and headed back down to the burn center to spend the night with Jack. I brought a camping mat to sleep on with a couple of warm blankets and I settled down for the night; not knowing what to expect...
