Burns Day 3, January 23

Thursday, January 23 -

Jack's wounds were cleaned this morning by a group of doctors.  I'm pretty sure it was Dr. Lee, Dr. Higginson, a Fellow and a Resident and some nurses.  I'm not sure though bc; unfortunately, Mike was in another part of the Burn Center getting his bandages changed and I went home to get some sleep.  I'm trying not to feel bad about this bc I've learned that these people who work with burn patients in burn centers are literal angels.  They do something everyday that most of us could never handle and they do it with care and compassion.
Today's cleaning was too much for Jack to bear (even with extra pain meds) so they will take him into the O.R. tomorrow and put him under so they can clean the wounds as well as they'd like to.
He will go under General Anesthesia tomorrow at 11:30am.  They will clean his burns and then decide how to proceed.  They have 3 different procedures they will decide between depending on how good or bad the burn looks.  One procedure is called Epic Fix (made from donated placenta).  If worse then they will decide on a couple of different skin grafts. One includes pig skin placement on the leg, one is cadaver skin and another is taking skin from his inner thigh and moving it to the areas of the leg that need it the most.  The skin graft has at least a week long recovery in the hospital.
We got moved to a new room!  It's 1,000 times better than the last one and I have my own bed.  We are away from the most serious burn patients now and it feels less creepy than the last room.  It's also quieter - it doesn't have that loud air conditioning vent any longer!
Jack walked too much yesterday so, unfortunately, his leg was too stiff to walk today.  They will do the graft tomorrow while he's sedated - if they decide that's what he needs.  A team of 4 doctors will be working on him and making the decisions.  We are trusting them to make the best decision for Jack's severity of injury.  These doctors are supposed to be great from what we've heard.
